BOATS

MAKING SIMPLE BOATS
Here are some material suggestions for making simple boats, toddlers can use in a pool, bathtub or sink.

Plastic lids.

Plastic bowls and containers.

Large sponges

Clean meat trays

BOAT RIDES

Give your toddler a small plastic open boat and a couple of small plastic people or blocks.

Set out a tub of water.

Have your child place the boat into the water.

Show her how to gently place a toy in the boat, then blow on the boat to give the object a “ride”.

COLOR BOATS
Set out three small plastic boats, each a different color.
Next, set out three sheets of colored paper, one to match each boat.
Hand the boats to your toddler.
Lay out the paper “water”.
Have your toddler place each boat in the water that matches it’s color.

BOATS & BRIDGES
Give your child a small boat to play with in the bathtub.
Make a simple bridge for the boat to travel under by stretching wide tape across the top of the tub, from one side to the other.

BOAT RHYME
Look in the toy box, find a little boat.
Put it in the water and watch it float.

BOAT SONG
Sung to the tune of “Row, Row, Row Your Boat”

Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream.
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a dream.
                                Traditional

Variation:

Row, row, row your boat
As fast as you can row.
The more you row,
And the faster you row,
The further you will go!
                                Jean Warren
Have your toddler pretend to row a boat, first slow (or gently), then as fast as they can go.
