PENGUINS

PENGUIN ART

PENGUIN PUPPETS
Set out some black paint and some toilet tissue tubes.
Give your children paint brushes and have them paint the tubes black.
When the tube is dry, set out some glue and some white paper oval shapes.
Set out small glue brushes and have your children glue the oval shapes onto the front of their black tubes.
Give each of your children two white paper reinforcements for eyes, (or small white paper circles with black pen circles in the center).
Next, give your children small white triangle shaped pieces of paper for beaks.
And finally, set out two wing shapes, per child, cut from black construction paper.
Puppets can be hand held as is, or a craft stick can be glued to the inside back side of each puppet for a handle.

BLACK AND WHITE COLLAGES
Give your children half a piece of white paper and half a piece of black paper each.
First, have them tear their two pieces of paper into smaller interesting shapes.
Then give them each a whole piece of white paper and some glue.
Have children glue the torn pieces of paper all over their larger papers to create black and white collages.
PENGUINE MOVEMENT
WADDLE LIKE PENGUINS
Have your children waddle like penguins over pretend ice, holding out their arms as they go.
Encourage them to slip and slide on the ice as well.

PENGUIN WADDLE This activity is just a penguin version of the “Hokey Pokey”

Have your children stand in a circle and do the actions to the song as you sing.

You put your right wing in, you take your right wing out,
You put your right wing in and you waddle all about.
You do the Penguin Waddle and you turn yourself around.
And that’s what it’s all about!

Continue singing about other body parts, such as; left wing, right foot, left foot, and head.

PENGUIN LANGUAGE

SIX LITTLE PENGUINS
Here is a number rhyme that your children will enjoy acting out.

Six little penguins off the iceberg did dive,
One bumped his head, then there were five.

Five little penguins swam the ocean floor,
One saw a whale, then there were four.

Four little penguins, climbed out of the sea,
One stayed in, then there were three.

Three little penguins, with nothing to do,
One went fishing, then there were two.

Two little penguins, having lots of fun,
One fell in the water, then there was one.

One little penguin, left all alone.
Saw the setting sun and went back home.
Adapted from a poem by Nancy J. Smith

PENGUIN SONGS

LITTLE PENGUINS
Tune:  “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”

Little penguins black and white
On the ice, what a sight!
See them waddle, see them glide.
Watch them as they slip and slide.
Little penguins black and white
On the ice, what a sight!

Little penguins black and white
On the ice, what a sight!
See them dive in the water blue.
See them catch a fish or two.
Little penguins black and white
On the ice, what a sight!
                        Elizabeth Scofield
Encourage your children to pretend to be penguins and act out the song as you sing.

I’M A LITTLE PENGUIN
Tune:  “I’m A Little Teapot”

I’m a little penguin short and stout.
I flap my wings and waddle about.
I wear a coat that’s black as night.
But my big tummy is soft and white.

I’m a little penguin black and white.
I like to waddle across the ice.
When I reach the water, I dive right in.
I hunt for fish, as I swim, swim, swim.
