OFF TO BED WE GO

A shadow musical by Jean Warren

(Before you start, you will need to hang a sheet up in the back of your stage or room and place a bright light behind the sheet (turned off).
As the play begins, all children march in, in front of the sheet, singing the following song.)

OFF TO BED WE GO
Tune:  “The Farmer In The Dell”

Oh, off to bed we go,  off to bed we go.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, off to bed we go.

Let’s sing as we go, let’s sing as we go.
Height-ho the derry-oh, let’s sing as we go.

We’re not afraid to go, we’re not afraid to go.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, we’re not afraid to go.

(Children pretend to get into beds on the floor)

First, we’ll get in bed, then lay down our heads.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, we’ll lay down our heads.

We’ll cover up real tight, then turn out the light.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, we’ll turn out the light.

(Turn out room lights as half of the children sneak out and stand behind the sheet, but in front of the lamp.  They are now Shadows.)

It’s pretty dark in here, we’ve nothing to fear.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, we’ve nothing to fear.

Did you hear a sound?  We better check around.
Heigh-ho the derry-oh, we better check around.

(Turn on the lamp behind the sheet.  The children behind the sheet begin to move and look like dancing shadows.)

Adult says:  “There is nothing to fear, children.  It’s just shadows dancing on the wall.

(Children in bed sit up and point at shadows and sing the following song.)

I SEE SHADOWS
Tune:  “Skip to My Lou”

I see shadows on the wall, I see shadows on the wall,
I see shadows on the wall, some are big and some are small.

(Shadows and Children do the same motions as previously instructed)

Watch them move like I do,

(Children and Shadows raise their hands.)

Watch them move like I do,  (Children and Shadows lower their hands.)
Watch them move like I do,  (Children and Shadows crouch down low.)
I pop up and they do, too! (Children and Shadows both jump up.)

(Adult says:  “It’s time to go to sleep children” – all children and shadows lay down.  Adult turns off lamp and children continue the song with the following verse.)

Back to bed we will go.     No more watching night time shows.
Back to bed we will go.     We’re not afraid of wall shadows!

THE END
(Adult turns on room lights and all children come out and form a line and bow.)

If you are using this musical as a parent production, you may want to have children dress in pajamas or other sleepwear.
