BUTTERFLY ACTIVITIES
PARTY STRAWS
You can make decorative straws for your children for a special occasion or any time by using the small butterfly pattern.
  • Cut out small butterflies for your children from construction or other decorative paper.
  • Have your children decorate the butterflies with marking pens.
  • When they are done, take each butterfly and fold it in- half. Then cut two small slits in the middle of each butterfly.
  • Stick a straw through the slits on each butterfly.
FLAPPING BUTTERFLIES
Your children will have fun manipulating these flapping butterflies indoors or outside.
  • Use the large butterfly pattern and cut out large butterflies for your children. Leftover wallpaper is great for this project or any medium weight paper.
  • Have your children fold their butterflies in-half and make two small slits in the middle of their butterflies body.
  • Now, give them each two chenille stems and have them stick the stems into the slit at the bottom of the butterfly from the back.
  • Then push the stems up the middle of the butterfly and back through the top slit.
  • Have them bend the chenille stems coming out the top to create two antennas.
  • Next, have them twist the two stems that come out the bottom together to form a sturdy handle.
  • Show your children how to hold onto the stem and flap their butterflies up and down.
  • Sing butterfly songs as your children flap their butterflies

BLOT ART

Blot art is one of the simplest, yet most dramatic creative art projects that preschoolers can do.
Cut out a large butterfly for each of your children.
Have them drop a few drops of paint or food coloring onto one side of their butterfly.
Then, have them fold the unpainted side on top of the painted side and run their hand over the top of the folded butterfly.
When they open up the butterfly, they will have created a matching blot design.

Hang up these beautiful butterflies in your windows or on the wall.

BUTTERFLY MOBIL
This activity utilizes all three sizes of butterflies.
Cut out two small, medium and large butterflies for each of your children.
Have them lay out three butterflies on a table (one of each size) and cover them with glue.
Next, have them line the butterflies up on the table with the big one on top and the other two below in a row.
Then, give them a piece of yarn or string (approx. 20" long) and have them run the string down the middle of each butterfly in a row, ending up in the middle of the small butterfly. There should be 3-4" of string sticking out of the top.
Finally, have them lay their remaining butterflies on top of the glued butterflies.
Help your children hang up their mobiles and indoors or outside.

3-D BUTTERFLIES

These 3-D butterflies are great for wall decorations.
Cut out two or more small butterflies for each of your children.
Have children lay one butterfly on the table and spread a thin strip of glue down the center of the butterfly.
Then have them place another butterfly on top and press together.
When the glue has dried, have children bend back the two top wings giving a 3-D effect.

BUTTERFLY CONCEPT GAMES
COLOR - Cut out 5 felt butterflies of different colors. Have your children take turns removing the butterflies as you call out the colors.
ALPHABET - Point out that the word "butterfly" starts with the "b" sound. Show your child how to make the letter "b".
SIZE - Cut a butterfly out of each size pattern. Have your child line them up from smallest to largest.
SPACIAL RELATIONS - Place small paper butterflies all over your room. Have your children take turns finding a specific butterfly, as you describe it's location.
Examples: "Bring me the butterfly on top of the book shelf" "Bring me the butterfly under the table".

FLANNELBOARD COUNTING GAME
Cut 5 small butterflies out of felt.
Place them on a small felt board.
Remove one butterfly as you recite each stanza of the following poem.

FIVE BUTTERFLIES
By Jean Warren
Five little butterflies by the door.
One flew away, then there were four.

Four little butterflies by the tree.
One flew away, then there were three.

Three little butterflies up in the blue.
One flew away, then there were two.

Two little butterflies out in the sun.
One flew away, then there was one.

One little butterfly now all alone.
She was so lonely, she flew home.
