TEN ART
TEN GOLD FISH
Take a plain white paper plate and cut off the top round, leaving the top of the plate with a flat edge, (to resemble a fish bowl).
Give the plate to your child and have her paint a blue wash over the plate.
Then set out some small paper fish shapes and some glue.
Have your child glue ten fish shapes on the plate, to resemble ten fish swimming in a fish bowl.
 
TEN FINGERS
Set out paper and a cup of tempera paint.
Have your children paint both of their hands and press them on their paper.
Have your children count the number of fingers on their picture.
Variation:  Make feet prints and have children count their toes.
 
TEN PETAL DAISIES
Give your child a piece of blue paper.
Then give him a 2” round yellow paper circle and some glue.
Have him glue the circle in the center of his paper.
Next, give him ten white paper petals to glue around his circle.
Let him add a stem and leaves with a green marking pen.
 
TEN LITTLE BUNNIES
Set out a bunny stamp and an ink pad.
Give your child a piece of paper and encourage her to make a picture with ten bunnies in it.
Set out crayons or markers for your child to add additional features to her picture.
 
TEN NECKLACES
Set out a bowl of round oat cereal (with holes) and a piece of yarn.
Help your child cover one end of the yarn with some tape to create a needle.
Have your child lace ten pieces of cereal on his necklace.
Help your child tape the two ends together.
Children enjoy wearing and eventually eating their necklaces.
 
TEN CHAINS
Cut out some 1” x 6” paper strips cut from colorful paper.
Set out some glue and have your child glue together ten links on a chain.
 
TEN GAMES
 
CARD TENS
Give your child a deck of playing cards.
Have her find the cards with the number 10 on them.
 
ROLLING FOR TEN
Set out two dice.
Have your child roll the dice and count the number of spots.
Can they roll a 10.
Encourage your child to find the two different combinations that make the number ten (five and five; four and six).
 
TEN RINGS
Set out some small plastic rings (over ten).
Have your child put one ring on each of his fingers.
Have your child count the number of rings on his fingers.
 
BOUNCING TEN TIMES
Give your child a ball.
Show her how to bounce the ball.
See if she can bounce the ball ten times without stopping.
 
BOWLING
Empty and clean out ten large soda bottles.
Set them out in a bowling triangle.
Have your children take turns rolling a ball and counting how many they can knock down.
The child who knocks down all ten is the winner.
 
COUNTING DIMES
Set out fifty dimes.
Have your child put them into piles of ten dime.
Tell your child that ten dimes is the same as one dollar.
Or in other words, one dollar is the same as ten dimes.
Extension:  Ask your child if he had a dollar and he wanted to buy some candy that cost 10 cents each, how many could he buy?
 
STACKING TEN BLOCKS
Set out twelve or more blocks.
Have a contest with your child (or between two children).
Each take a turn stacking blocks.
See who can stack ten blocks without the blocks falling.
 
RED FISH – BLUE FISH
Cut ten red fish and ten blue fish from heavy paper.
Mix them up on a table.
Have your child sort the fish into two piles of ten fish.

TEN RHYMES

TEN LITTLE MONKEYS
             Ten little monkeys jumping on the bed.
             One fell off and bumped his head.
             Mother called the doctor and the doctor said,
             “No more monkeys jumping on the bed.

(Continue with nine little monkeys and so on until all the monkeys have fallen off the bed.  This is a fun rhyme to act out with ten children.)

ONE, TWO BUCKLE MY SHOE
                        One, two, buckle my shoe.
                        Three, four, shut the door.
                        Five, six, pick up sticks.
                        Seven, eight, lay them straight.
                        Nine, ten, a big fat hen.
 

TOP TEN
Make top ten lists with your children.  Number them as you go.  Such as:
Favorite foods
Fun places to go
Pets
Toys
 
TEN RED APPLES

Cut a large apple tree shape out of green felt.
Cut ten small apple shapes out of red felt.
Place the felt tree on a feltboard and arrange the apples shapes out on it.
Red the following rhyme.
Ask one of your children to pick the apples as directed in the rhyme.
Leave out the tree and apple shapes and let your children play with them.
Encourage them to repeat your rhyme or to make up other wasy to pick and distribute the apples.
 

Ten red apples up in the tree.
Two for you and two for me.
Two for sister, two for mother,
Two for my little brother.

WRITING NUMERAL TEN
Here is a rhyme to help your children remember how to write the number 10.
STICK BALL
           Make a stick
           With your pen
           Then add a ball
           That makes ten.
 
TEN SCIENCE
 
MAKING COLLECTIONS
Encourage your child to make collections of ten.  Such as;
A coin collection
A leaf collection
A toy car collection
A flag collection
A shell collection
 
GIANT BUBBLE BLOWERS
Set out some plastic straws.
Have your child count out ten and hold then all together.
Secure the bundle of straws with rubber bands.
Set out a pan of bubble solution.
Have your child dip her giant bubble blower into the solution and then blow air through the other ends of the straws.
 
CRAB LEGS
Set out a real crab or a picture of a crab.
Have your child count the number of legs the crab has.
Discuss how the crab uses his different legs.

Here are some snack suggestions for the number ten.
Long stock of celery, with cheese spread and ten raisins on top of cheese.
Ten fish crackers (alone or in soup)
Frozen waffle with whipped cream and ten blueberries on top.
Baggie with ten pretzel sticks and ten chocolate chips inside.
Ten treasure coins (carrot rounds)
