RHYTHM STICK SONGS

I like to call these tapping sticks with young children.  You can use regular store purchased rhythm sticks or you can use chop sticks or just 10” wooden dowels.  At home, you can even use two table knives.

  • It is important that all children have a pair of sticks before beginning.
  • Have preschoolers sit on the floor with their legs crossed, so they have lots of floor space around them on which to tap.

Here are some songs to sing while your children tap their sticks on the floor, or one stick on top of the other.

LET’S ALL TAP OUR STICKS
Tune:  “Mulberry Bush”

Let’s all tap - our sticks today,
Sticks today, sticks today.
Let’s all tap - our sticks today.
Let’s tap them - on our hand.

Tap, tap - tap, tap, tap,
Tap, tap - tap, tap, tap,
Tap, tap – tap, tap, tap,
Tapping on our hand.
                                Jean Warren
Repeat with other places to tap the sticks.
Such as; head, arm, foot, elbow, etc.

BILLY GOATS GO TRIP, TRAPPING

Tune:  “Jingle Bell”  (chorus only)

Trip, Trap, Trip, Trap
Across the bridge they come.
Here comes the Billy Goats,
Trip, trapping, one by one.

Here comes baby goat
Tripping lightly so,
Trip, trap, trip, trap
That’s the way he goes.

Trip, trap, trip, trap,
Louder taps, I hear
The middle goat trips ‘cross the bridge
The troll he does not fear.

Here comes the great big goat
Watch the bridge sway.
His trip, traps, sound so loud,
He scares the troll away!
                                Jean Warren

(Children tap sticks to make sounds effects for the goats
As they trip, trap across the bridge.)

IF YOU’RE HAPPY AND YOU KNOW IT
Tune:  “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

Cross your sticks in the air, in the air.
Tap your sticks in the air, in the air.
Tap your sticks in the air, do it with a flair.
Tap your sticks in the air, in the air.

Tap your sticks on the floor, on the floor.
Tap your sticks on the floor, on the floor.
Tap your sticks on the floor, then do it some more.
Tap your sticks on the floor, on the floor.

FOUND TWO RHYTHM STICKS

Tune:  “Found A Peanut”

Found two rhythm sticks,
Found two rhythm sticks,
Found two rhythm sticks, just now.

Just now, I found two rhythm sticks
And I will tell you how.

They were laying,
They were laying,
In the middle of the floor,
So I stopped and picked them up
And walked right out the door.

You should see me,
You should see me,
Play those rhythms sticks today.
I can tap out any song
Just listen to me play!

Tap, tap - tap, tap,
Tap, tap - tap, tap,
Tap, tap, tap - tap, tap, tap, tap.

Tap, tap - tap, tap,
Tap, tap - tap, tap,
Tap, tap, tap - tap, tap, tap, tap!

TAP YOUR STICKS
Tune:  “Frere Jacques”

Tap your sticks.
Tap your sticks.
One, two, three.
One, two, three.

Can you tap your sticks,
Can your tap your sticks,
Just like me,
Just like me?

Tap your sticks,
Tap your sticks,
Way up high,
Way up high.

No-w, bend down,
No-w, bend down,
Tap the ground.
Tap the ground.

OH, HE’S A VERY GOOD TAPPER

Tune:  “The Bear Went Over The Mountain”

Oh, he’s a very good tapper.
Oh, he’s a very good tapper.
Oh, he’s a very good tapper.
That nobody can deny.

Which nobody can deny.
Which nobody can deny.
Oh, he’s a very good tapper.
Which nobody can deny.
                                Jean Warren
                                Adapted Traditional

Replace the word “he’s” with the name of a child.
Sing about the child, while the child taps out the
Tune of the song.

YANKEE DOODLE
Tune:  “Yankee Doodle”

Yankee Doodle went to town,
Tapping sticks together.
Everybody thought that he (or she)
Was very, very clever.

Yankee Doodle keep it up,
Yankee Doodle Dandy.
Mind the music and your step,
And keep your sticks handy.
                                Jean Warren
                                Adapted Traditional

Let your children take turns pretending to
Ride into town playing their tapping sticks,
While everyone sings about them.
