HAPPY MAY DAY continued...

LET'S GO A-MAYING
In olden times, young people went out early on May Day to gather blossoms for their May Day celebration. Take your child "a-Maying" by walking around your neighborhood and looking at spring flowers in bloom. Or visit a local plant nursery and pick out a special flowering plant to bring home for May Day.

MAYPOLE FUN
Fashion a simple maypole in your backyard by tying long colorful streamers around a tree trunk or to the top of a pole stuck firmly in the ground. Then invite your child and her friends to hold onto the ends of the streamers and move around your maypole as you sing "Oh, Let's Go Round Our Maypole," below.

OH, LET'S GO ROUND OUR MAYPOLE

Tune: "The Bear Went Over the Mountain"

Oh, let's go round our maypole,
Oh, let's go round our maypole,
Oh, let's go round our maypole
And sing our May Day song.

And sing our May Day song,
And sing our May Day song.

Oh let's go round our maypole,
Oh, let's go round our maypole,
Oh, let's go round our maypole
And sing our May Day song.
                         Elizabeth Scofield

Continue by singing a verse for each child: "Oh, Brooke goes round our maypole," etc.

MAY BASKET SNACK
Turn a paper baking cup into a May basket by taping on a ribbon handle. Fill the basket with a lightweight snack for your child, such as a spoonful of raisins, some tiny crackers, or a cookie. For a sturdier basket, tie a yarn handle onto a colorful paper drinking cup.
