ORDERING PUMPKINS
You will need a variety of pumpkins for this activity.

Set out three to five pumpkins of different sizes. |
|
Have your child place the pumpkins in order of their size, starting with the smallest.
|

MEASURING PUMPKINS
You will need a variety of pumpkins and a ball of yarn for this activity.
|
Set out two or three pumpkins. |
|
Help your child use the yarn to wrap around the middle of one pumpkin. |
|
Cut the yarn and lay the yarn out in front of that pumpkin. |
|
Repeat with the other two pumpkins. |
|
Line up the yarn strips and see which pumpkin is the largest around the middle. |
|
WEIGHING PUMPKINS
This is a fun activity to do at the grocery store. |
|
Let your child pick out two to three pumpkins to weigh. |
|
Have him place them on the vegetable scale to see how much each one weighs. |
|
Which pumpkin is the heaviest? Which one is the lightest?
|
ESTIMATING SEEDS IN A PUMPKIN
Purchase a medium sized pumpkin and take it home. |
|
Have your child estimate how many seeds they will find inside the pumpkin. |
|
Cover a table with newsprint. |
|
Then, cut off the top of the pumpkin and scoop out the seeds and pulp. |
|
Let your child help you collect all of the pumpkin seeds. |
|
Count the pumpkin seeds. Was your child close? |
|
|
GROWING PUMPKIN SEEDS
|
Plant some of the seeds from your pumpkin in a pot with dirt. |
|
Set in a window that will get sunshine and have your child water the seed every two or three days.
|
|
MOLDY PUMPKIN EXPERIMENT
|
Cut three large pieces of pumpkin.
• Put one piece on a plate and cover it with a clear, glass bowl.
• Put the second one on a plate and leave it uncovered.
• Put the third one in a bowl of water.
|
|
Have your child observe the three pieces of pumpkin each day.
• Help your child notice the different ways they decay. |
|
Keep the experiment going as long as you can stand it! |
