FIVE SENSES
Use a watermelon to help teach your children about the five senses and how we can learn different information from each sense.
Have your children observe the watermelon. What does it look like? |
Touch the watermelon. What does it feel like? |
Tap the watermelon. What does it sound like? |
Sniff a piece of watermelon. What does it smell like? |
Eat a piece of watermelon. What does it taste like?

SEQUENCE CARDS
The life cycle of a watermelon can make a great set of sequence cards.
Make four sequence cards that show; a seed in the ground, a sprout, a vine, then a vine with a watermelon growing on it. |
Let your children take turns arranging the cards in the proper order. |
WEIGHING WATERMELONS |
Bring in a couple of watermelons and a scale. |
Let your children take turns weighing the watermelons.
ESTIMATING CIRCUMFERENCE |
Set out a large watermelon and four or five different lengths of yarn. |
Have your children take turns guessing which one is the actual circumference of the watermelon. |
SINK OR FLOAT
Here is a fun activity that will probably surprise your children.
Set out a large tub of water and a watermelon next to it. |
Have your children predict whether or not the watermelon will sink or float in the water. |
