Fall is a great time to explore the corn plant. Your children will be surprised at all the products that are made from corn.
GROWING CORN
|
Let your children plant some corn seeds in a small container of dirt. |
|
Have your children set the container in the sun and water it every other day. |
Variation: Place an ear of Indian corn in a dish filled with 1” water. Change water daily and watch what grows.

GROWNING CORN SEQUENCE CARDS
|
Select four medium-sized index cards. |
|
Use crayons or markers to draw pictures on the cards that depict four stages in the growth of a corn plant.
1) Plant the seed
2) Watering the sprout
3) Viewing the tall, green corn plant in the sun
4) Picking the corn ears. |
|
Mix up the cards and give them to your children to arrange in the proper order. |

CORN TEXTURES |
|
Bring in some fresh corn (on the cob) for your children to explore. |
|
Have them examine the husks, the silk threads and finally the kernels inside. |
|
Have your children describe how each part of the corn feels.
|
USES OF CORN |
|
Bring in a display of items made from corn. |
|
Suggestions: Corn bread, corn oil, canned corn, popcorn, corn chips, corn tortillas, cornmeal, etc. |
|
You may even want to discuss with your children how engines can run on ethinal gasoline. |

TYPES OF CORN
|
Bring in examples of white corn, yellow corn, and Indian corn.
