DECORATING EASTER EGGS

Creating designs on egg shells is fun for preschoolers.
There are many simple ways to create exciting decorations.

TISSUE PAPER EGGS
Have your children dip hard-boiled eggs in water and then cover them with small squares of tissue paper. (Be sure the paper is the kind that will bleed.)
When the eggs are dry, remove the tissue paper to reveal the softly colored shells.

TWO COLOR EGGS
Have your child hold a hard-boiled egg, half-way down into some egg dye for a minute.
Then, set it in an egg holder to dry.
When dry, have her dip the opposite end into a different color of dye, to dye the other half.

SPONGE PAINTING EGGS
Give your children some small sponge squares and some tempera paint.
Have the children dip a sponge into one color of paint and press the sponge onto an egg shell a number of times.
If desired, have them repeat the process with another sponge and another color of paint.

MARKING PEN EGGS
Give your children some colored marking pens and each a hard-boiled egg.
Let the children decorate their egg using the pens.

STICKER EGGS

Let your children decorate a hard-boiled egg using small stickers.
If you do not have stickers, they could glue on small characters cut from the comics.

RUBBER BAND EGGS
Have your child wrap one or more small rubber bands onto his egg before dying it.
When the egg is dry, remove the rubber bands and your child’s egg will have white crossed lines on it.

WHITE CRAYON DESIGNS
Give your child a white crayon and let her design on an egg shell.
When she dyes her egg the parts with the crayon will resist the dye and the design will show through.

LEAF DESIGNS
Here is a slightly more complicated method of creating designs on eggs.
Have your child lay a small leaf or fern on his egg shell.
Then help him wrap a small piece of netting or square of nylon stocking around the egg securing the leaf tightly in place.
Wrap rubber bands around the two ends of the netting, and then have him dye the eggs as usual.
When dry, remove the coverings and the leaf to reveal a white leaf shape.

MASKING TAPE DESIGNS
Give your child some narrow strips of masking tape.
Show her how to wrap small pieces of tape on her eggs before dying them.
When the eggs are dry, remove the tape strips to reveal white crossing lines.
