LEMONS AND
LIMES |
|
Place yellow and green paint on paper plates for your children |
|
Cut a limes and lemons in half. Squeeze out their juice and
save for aide drinks. |
|
Give your children large pieces of white paper
and the fruit halves. |
|
Show them how to dip the lemons in yellow paint
and the limes in the green paint, then make fruit prints on
their papers.
|
|
LEAF PRINTS
|
|
Have your children collect one or two different
types of leaves. |
|
Set out some paint. Fall colors look great. |
|
Give each child three pieces of white paper. |
 |
Show your children how to set their leaves
on one piece of paper, then paint over the tops of them. |
 |
Then have them pick up the leaves carefully
and place them up-side-down on another paper. |
 |
Then have them place the third paper on
top of the leaves and press across the paper causing the
paint on the leaves to press onto the bottom paper. |
 |
Finally, have them remove the top paper
and the leaves. |
 |
They should be left with leave prints on
their bottom paper. |
Alternative: Children
can also do leaf rubbings with leaves, crayons and paper. |

DECORATING
"L's" |
 |
Using light cardboard and the L pattern, make a large L cut
out for each of your children. |
 |
Give them one of the following to decorate
their L with:
Small leaves
Circle stickers to turn into lollipops by drawing on stems.
|
|
MAKING LANTERNS
Cutting paper lanterns has always been fun for young children.
 |
Give each child a piece of 9” x 12” construction paper and some scissors. |
 |
Have children fold their papers in half. |
 |
Then have them use a ruler and mark 1” marks along the fold. |
 |
Finally have them cut across the paper, from each mark to with-in 1” of the opposite edge. |
 |
When finished cutting, show your children how to open their papers and then roll the paper into a cone and securing the ends together with tape. |
 |
The lanterns should expand out from the middle to resemble old time lanterns. |

COUNTING
LADYBUG SPOTS
 |
Make 5 bug shapes (a large
oval with a small circle shape attached for a head). |
 |
With a black marking pen, make
1-5 black dots on the back of each ladybug. |
 |
Next, make 5 leaves and write
numerals on the leaves 1 thru 5. |
 |
Set out the leaves and the ladybugs. |
 |
Have your children take turns
matching up the number of spots on the ladybugs
with the corresponding numbered leaves. |
 |
Children should set the correct
ladybug on top of the corresponding leaf |

PLAY
LIBRARY
 |
Set up an area with books and let your children
play library. |
 |
Let your children take turns being the librarian. |
 |
Provide some blank cards and some pens. |
 |
Show your children how to write the letter "L"
on the card to put in the book when someone wants
to check out a book from the library.
|
L STORIES
 |
Look for stories about lambs, lions, ladybugs,
leopards at the library. |
 |
Look for stories that start with the word
"Little" or other L words. |
|
|
|
PRE-WRITING
ACTIVITIES FOR L
 |
Give your children some licorice
sticks and have them make L shapes. |
 |
Make L's out of toothpicks. |
 |
Make playdough L's. |
 |
Write L's in a salt box. |
 |
Make L shapes from a shoe lace. |

|
L ANIMALS
 |
Go to the library and help your children find books
on Lions, Lizards, Leopards, Ladybugs or Lambs. |
 |
Have your children make a book about their favorite
L animal. |
 |
Have them find out where the animal lives, what his
house is like, what he eats, etc. |
 |
Have them draw pictures of their animals in their books.

LITTER |
 |
When studying the letter L, is a good
time to discuss litter and how it effects our environment. |
 |
You could discuss litter on roads
and sidewalks or |
 |
Discuss litter in lakes and the ocean. |
