OPPOSITES – HARD & SOFT

OPPOSITES FOUND IN FOOD
There are many opportunities when feeding young children, for them to observe opposites.

SPAGHETTI –Show your child uncooked spaghetti and then compare it to cooked spaghetti. Discuss how the uncooked spaghetti is hard, where as the cooked spaghetti is soft.

MARSHMALLOWS – Give your child a marshmallow.  Is it hard or soft?
Then give your child a stale marshmallow. How has it changed?

BREAD – Set out a piece of fresh bread and a piece of toast.  How does toasting change the bread.  One is soft and one is hard.

APPLES – Let your child examine apple slices and applesauce.  How are they alike and how are they different?

OPPOSITES FOUND AROUND THE HOUSE
Look around your house what examples can you find that will demonstrate soft vs. hard with your child.

FLOOR – Some floors are hard with a wood or tile surface.  Some floors
are soft with a carpet surface.

TOYS – Plush or rubber toys are soft, trucks and cars are hard, etc.

BEDS  - Some beds are soft and some are hard.

Go for a walk around your house with your child. Have him look for objects
that are soft. Then go for another walk around your house and look for
             objects that are hard.
