DO’S & DON’TS WHEN WORKING WITH PRESCHOOLERS
 

ART

  • Do give children open-ended art projects requiring very little adult help.
  • Don’t have children do art with a right and a wrong way of doing things.

GAMES

  • Do use open-ended toys that let the children decide what the toys should do.
  • Don’t play structured games with strict rules of what is right and wrong.
     

CUTTING

  • Do provide open-ended cutting experiences.
  • Don’t require cutting on a specific line.

COLORING

  • Do present open-ended coloring experiences.
  • Don’t require coloring within the lines.
     

LETTERS

  • Do immerse children in letters and words in their environments.
  • Don’t give children projects that require letter or letter sound recognition.

STORIES

  • Do read stories to children that have meaning to them.  Adapt stories if necessary.
  • Don’t read stories that have little meaning to the children.
     

DRAMATICS

  • Do have children participate in open-ended performances.
  • Don’t put children on the spot and require individual performances.

EXPLORATIONS

  • Do allow children to explore objects in their environment with all five senses.
  • Don’t teach children by just telling them about something.
     

PLAY

  • Do understand that when children are playing, they are busy trying to understand their environment by experimenting and role playing.
  • Don’t regard children’s play as a non- learning time.

SUCCESS

  • Do help children build positive self-esteem and applaud their success, no matter how small.  Set realistic goals for preschoolers.
  • Don’t set unrealistic goals for young children.
