Halloween customs have been changing in recent years, but many of
the traditions are still fun to celebrate.
Below are some ideas to try with your child.
|
HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS
 |
Together, make orange and black paper chains with strips of
construction paper and tape. Hang the chains around the room.
|
|
Let your child draw black marker faces on paper pumpkin shapes.
Tape the pumpkins to a window for passersby to view. |
|
Fashion a mobile of friendly ghosts. Have your child tear
freeform ghost shapes out of white paper and draw on eyes. Suspend
the ghosts with thread from a coat hanger and watch them float
and flutter in the air. |
|
| PUMPKIN
FRAME MASK
This is a great mask for a child who is not comfortable
having his entire face covered.
Cut the center out of a paper plate. Give your child the plate rim
to paint orange for a pumpkin frame. On the back of the frame, tape
a plastic straw "handle." Show your child how to hold
up the frame mask and make "jack-o'-lantern faces" through
the hole.
|
|
HALLOWEEN PUZZLE
Find a child's Halloween greeting card (one made of stiff
paper works well). Cut off the front of the card and discard the
back. Then cut the card front into four or five puzzle pieces, give
them to your child, and invite her to put them back together.

STICKER GAME
Collect two sets of matching Halloween stickers, making
sure each pair is different. Attach one set down the left-hand side
of a piece of paper. Attach the other set down the right-hand side
in a different order. To play, have your child draw lines to connect
the matching pairs of stickers.
Hint: For a game that can be played more than once, put the paper
inside a clear-plastic report cover. Your child can draw lines on
the plastic with a crayon, then use a tissue to "erase."

|
MASK & COSTUME FUN
These activities help reinforce understanding of Halloween make-believe.
|
Sit with your child in front of a mirror and invite him to
try on a few Halloween masks. Ask him to describe what he looks
like wearing each one. Then you try on the masks and have him
tell what you look like. |
|
Provide a box of dress-up clothes and encourage your child
to create different costumes. When she looks in the mirror,
what does she see? |
|
| I'M A LITTLE
GHOST
Tune: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat:"
I'm a little ghost
Flying through the air.
Boo, boo, boo to you!
Did I give you a scare?
More Verses: I'm a little bat; I'm a little owl.
|
|
LITTLE JACK SNACKS
Invite your child to spread orange frosting on round
cookies to make pumpkins. Have him add faces using chocolate chips.
Or give him round crackers topped with cheese spread and let him
use raisins to create faces.
